Thank you to everyone for the most valuable input.
I almost discarded the idea of 'NAS' when I realised that the Firebird server is not going to work on it, until the comments received from Lester and Kjell.
I have never considered a linux server before, but it sounds like a good idea, and as Lester said, it can be a cheaper option than a dedicated NAS box.
