Don't know if this helps or if it has been said already, but I have a
very similar situation in one of my apps. The solution that I applied
was to make a other blob field with *always* plain text in it. So,
whatever was saved at the field with RTF, the app also saved a copy of
everything as PlainText at this other field at the same moment.
