You don't get a Guardian tray icon when installing as a service.

Is it possible that you attempted the installation while not logged in with
Admin rights?

I didn't use the installer for RC 4 but I thought it had the option of
Classic or SS...could you reboot the system and check whether there is a
service running named fb_inet_server? That is the Classic server. It
doesn't use Guardian or FBserver.exe, but it is started by instsvc.exe.

I'll download the RC4 installer and check it...
