It would be better and safer if you use matching server and client library,
but in most of the cases, unmatched versions work.

If you want to get rid of some bug that exists in one version of gds32. For
example, executing procedures multiple times. Last time I checked, the bug
was still in IB, but it's fixed in FB.

ODS is On Disk Structure. Go to cvalde.com, click on documentation and read
the glossary. It's the structure of the gdb. It doesn't have to change with
a new engine. Borland upgraded it (the minor version) for IB6.5 to signal
their metadata protection feature.
