Embedded part) I would not be sure what it meant either.
It needs translation even into English.
I've always disliked the term "Embedded" - not that I have
a better suggestion. Its just that it is far from intuitive
what it actually means - the term in not in wide enough use
to be easily recognised and interpretted.
Enterprise is better (in English anyway) _only_ because it
has been used as industry jargon both long enough (in terms
of time) and wide enough (in terms of different industry
sections and in marketing) to be recognised and understood
on its own - even if it is not very meaningful (my little
two-bit operation is an "enterprise" but that is not what
the term is targetting).
And believe it or not I have a problem with "to" too. It has
too many different meanings in such a limited context. Are
we indicating conversion from Embedded to Enterprise - No.
Are we indicating a translation layer between Embedded
applications and Enterprise - No. Are we indicating the full
series of all applications from Embedded to Enterprise - No,
not really because it cannot support embedded and other clients
at the same time. We must be trying (ambiguously) to indicate
the full set of applications from which you may choose.
Another problem I have with many current offerings. When I
see: "Coke is life" (or whatever they are using these days) I
already know what "Coke" is (the dark-drinkable version
anyway). If I did not know what it was the slogan would have
very little impact. This sort of thing is provided through a
larger advertising campaign that will effectively associate the
product (you can see what it is on the TV screen) and the term.
It seems to me that Firebird is in a different position. Many
of the people we are targetting have never heard the name and
will never have heard the term "embedded" in relation to
software. If we dont tell them what Firebird is, then its hard
to get anyone relevant to be emotional about it.
It is one of the nice things I have to say about the current
millenium slogan - at least it tells people what Firebird is.
We are not about to launch a big TV campaign to make sure that
everyone knows what "Firebird" is - oh and this is the catchy
slogan they have to go with it.
If I put the Firebird logo on my website and it says something
like: "Firebird: Your powerful ally" or "Firebird: The Legend"
What is there to tell visitors if it represents anything of
interest to them? These could mean anything.
After everything I have read so far on this thread, I would
like to suggest something more direct like:
Firebird: SQL relational databases
If you want to tack "with excellence" on the end or "really
really good" on the start then thats fine. But given our
apparently low visibility let us at least start by saying what
is this thing called Firebird.
