this thing just keeps getting better and better.

Unfortunately, C++ doesn't like your factory class as it claims to be an
'unimplemented language feature'. It is the abstract class member that is
causing the difficulties.

I'll have a proper look at this later and see if I can solve it.

pattern (or call it a plugin...)
