Found the problem. Silly me. Nothing to do with TurboSync or IBObjects.
When an IBO unit was added to the uses clause, it made the conduit dll try
to load the FB client. It was finding a FB version 1.5 gds32.dll, which was
directing it to a non-existent fbclient.dll.
It would be useful to remember that this situation gives an error 217, and
the Delphi debugger is no help.
After cleaning up the FB installations, everything works fine. Sorry about
the red herring.
