What we are talking about is make some common tasks easier. The fact that VCL does something one way, does not mean that's the best one.
I think that 80% of date entered in IBO apps are for accounting or PIM programs, so it's rare you have to set a year different from the current (ok, on december it's more likely ;), and usually you have to enter the current date, or some day around. Having a facility that pre-fills the field with the current date can same huge amount of typing, expecially for situations, like your and mine (Italy), where the date format is dd/mm/yy.
