Did you happen to notice the first statement in my posting? Here it is:

"The following is my opinion, based solely upon my views about good and bad GUIs for client/server applications..."

Do you not consider I have the right to express an opinion? Have you considered the possibility that my opinion is based on many years' experience with end-users?

As you may have noticed in another recent OPINION I gave, I've discovered time and time again that users accept the awkwardness of the spreadsheet interface because *their* experience tells them that "this is the way computers work". It's rarely consistent with the way they do *their* work.

Why be defensive about your assumptions? Why not challenge them and be willing to break old patterns? Go and be an end-user. Spend some time doing THEIR job with YOUR software. Go out there among them, prototype their ideas (after all, you have the best prototyping tool in the world staring back at you every day!). Innovate lest you stagnate!
