I think the "optional FB port number in the connect string" was
introduced so that you would not need the entry in the services file -
just to ease configuration. And, I don't know in which release it was
introduced.
I could not see whether David Husarik used the IP address directly or a
server name (defined in the hosts file). The ability to use the IP
address in the connect string is dependent on the version of Winsock (I
think) - probably Win/9x rules this out.
