Sorry forgot to answer your question : Is it happens again after Firebird restart ?
I have not restarted the Firebird as the tests are running. As I have mentioned it happens only intermittently and the job trying to get a particular  connection fails. The other jobs are able to get connections and they are successful and the database seems to work fine. The rate at which this is happening is once in 6 hrs or so.
BTW we are using DBCP connection pooling.
ThanksJD
