Thanks very much for your help Amoradell.

I reinstalled 1.5.5 and the problem went away. No idea what caused it though.
Anyway, while I was at it, I backed up all my 1.5.x database then just upgraded
everything to 2.1 and the problem didn't manifest itself there either.

Odd.
