I'm quite a step further in the meantime: the problem seems to be in
the start script. I can't start the server
with '/etc/init.d/firebird start', but I _can_ start it, logged in
as user firebird, with 'fbmgr.bin -start -forever'. As I don't want
the server started at boot, this is a bit less convenient, but no
real problem.

My suspicion: could the start script still try to use 'masterkey' as
the SYSDBA password? I had changed this using gsec, then worked a
little with fbsql, shut down the machine, rebooted and - no
firebird.

Still, I'll report it to Gentoo. As far as I can see, the
modification of the files layout may not be finished. At all events
it changed again between firebird-2.0.3.12981.0-r2 and -r4.

Thanks for the help,
