I did get an error connecting to localhost & the external interface name.

Should I rebuild my o/s and then install classic server?

SQL> connect 'trinity:/ibdata/phone.fdb';
Statement failed, SQLCODE = -902

Unable to complete network request to host "trinity".
-Failed to establish a connection.
-Connection refused

On your linux box, can you connect to localhost?
`isql -u sysdba -p masterkey localhost:/path/to/database.fdb`

Then, to your external interface
`isql -u sysdba -p masterkey servername:/path/to/database.fdb`

If you can, then there's nothing wrong with your firebird installation.
