I use my machine for programming all day and have email open which checks
email every 5 minutes and I have cable internet so it's never silent anyway.
Even my screensaver connects because I run SETI BOINC.

Not only that but it would generate more network traffic which might not
please some people. Having an option that could be turned on/off might be
worth looking at though.
