Middleware, in this case, would be your data access layer, but with better
(compressed) data transfer over a low bandwidth connection. On the client
side, you would not directly talk to your database, but to the middleware
application.

Altenatively, you could also use Zebedee as a network packet compression
utility between your normal Firebird client and Firebird server. Search
google, there's articles around.
