Those who have been around the lists for a long time understand the
symbolism behind "the pointy hat". It's a list joke, or tradition, if you
like. When I sign a posting with a caret in front of my name, like so:
^ heLen
I am wearing the pointy hat (the witch's hat, headgear of the resident
Witch, moderator's hat).
The "heLen" signature has a history behind it, too. A regular poster a few
years ago habitually referred to me as "Hellen". Ever since, in this list,
I make the point about my name having only one "L". It's not like I don't
already have enough "L's". My full married name is HeLen ELizabeth
McCuLLoch CuLLen.
When I'm not wearing the witch's hat, I sign with " ./heLen". The reason
for the ./ is to remind me constantly to provide the right syntax when
offering a command-line example of gbak, gfix, etc. for a Linux user.
So - no harm, no offence.
