Thanks for sticking with me on this.
Sounds like I should upgrade the structure of this database to UDS=10. Pavel
suggested using IB6 gbak to backup the database, and the FB gbak to restore
it. Does that seem like the right thing to do?

Jim,
My best bet is that the ODBC driver supports ODS 10 and
up.
ODS 10 adds a new field (RDB$FIELD_PRECISION) to
system table RDB$FIELDS. So that might be your problem.
You can contact the ODBC driver programmer if you like.
