Indeed. My installation is definitely screwed up. However, it appears
that Firebird is using some mechanism other than the "Startup" folder to
start a new firebird server when I log in. I did what you recommended,
but Firebird still starts up whenever I log in. I even removed and
reinstalled Firebird with a reboot in between and it still happens.

Do you know what mechanism it uses to start Firebird on login?

You have a screwed-up installation. Two things you need to do are:

1) Go into your Windows Start MEnu/Startup and delete any shortcuts
there
for Firebird
2) Shut down the serveice, then go into the bin directory of your
firebird
installation in a command window. Run the program instreg.exe twice.
The
first time
instreg.exe -r

the second time
instreg.exe -i

That should do it.
