WinXP Home?
Using Microsoft 'share connection' stuff?
These do not like local network TCP/IP and that is probably where the
problem is.

Can you install Firebird on the 'other' XP machine. You don't need to
USE it on that machine, only access it from the first machine, and you
get the best of both worlds, if the other machine is not being used
things can be quicker as you share the load :)
