Yep, bound by Chinese regulatory to use GB18030.

The bad news is that the the new characters in part come from
the non BMP planes of Unicode and that the GB18030 is un-godly
large.

Taken together with the fact the Firebird is still by and large in the
"65536 characters are enough for everybody" era, you can see the
trouble.

I assume you are bound by Chinese regulatory action to use GB18030?

I'll have to think and look around a bit, to give a more usefull answer.
