Hi David,
the non BMP planes of Unicode and that the GB18030 is un-godly
large.
Taken together with the fact the Firebird is still by and large in the
"65536 characters are enough for everybody" era, you can see the
trouble.
I assume you are bound by Chinese regulatory action to use GB18030?
I'll have to think and look around a bit, to give a more usefull answer.
