Actually, I found a couple of weeks ago that MS decided to use the
".gdb" extension for some of its own files.

I noted this when looking at the update messages from the WinXP disk
defragmenter. When I tried to find the file myself, the system could
find them, but they are there...

Apparently, these files contain data which MS feels needs to be
controlled by the System Restore feature.
