Salvatore,
If the machine has only 1 physical CPU then the multi CPU kernal of
WinXP/2000 will fail to work correctly when HT is off in the BIOS. This is
why you are getting the 5-7 minute boot.
I would recommend turning off Seti@home until the machine is running okay.
What OS is the older P4 2Ghz running?
Have you tried FB on that?

More questions than answers this time sorry!

hello Richard,

no, the actual machine is for development only, and CPUAffinity in
firebird.conf is already set = 1.

Anyway I have tried to momentarily turn off HT, but the machine
becomes almost unusable (taking 5-7 minutes only for boot), maybe
because I'm also running Seti@home client, which takes almost all the
cpu for itself (but only 50% with HT on). If I close Seti client the
machine returns at a normal usability. But the strange thing is that I
run Seti client also on the second older machine with a P4 2 GHz. that
doesn't have HT at all, and that machine is perfectly usable even if
cpu usage is 100%.

Thank you for the information.

Best regards
Salvatore
