the gemini driver works very well for this purpose
from all my testing and use
I have clients who use access to read and edit table in their IB database. I
give their logon only the permission I deem suitable. I have no complaints.
The old intersolv driver is fine for dialect 1 db's, the gemini for both 1
and 3

Yes, but there were quite recently a number of discussions on this
list regarding the lack of stability/functionalities of ODBC driver
both freeware & commercial. So I feel I am a bit stuck here
