IBO may not be a viable solution if one wants to also access MS SQLserver
from the same source code.
However, accessing both Firebird/Interbase _and_ MSSQLserver from the same
code will probably lead to a suboptimal solution since there are rather
differences in the architectures of the databases.

If you want to use one of the best (if not _the_ best!) component set for
Fb/IB you should consider IBO. I don't know why a free solution is
required (your customers can afford MS SQLserver?), but you could contact
the author (Jason Wharton) directly and see if you can work out an
agreement (see http://www.ibobjects.com/ibo_Trustware.html).
