so far replies have answered the question mentioned in the Subject line.
So yes, the Interbase Public License probably guarantees that the
Firebird fork will remain free for good.

But Marcelos's main question was different, and much harder to answer:
who's to guarantee eternal development and improvement of Firebird?

What kind of "certificates" does MySQL have in terms of eternal
development?

In any case I believe that during the next 5-20 years or so, there will
be people interested in developing Firebird. Can anybody say more?
