Thanks to all for the comments.

I really hadn't understood (or really thought about it) that the garbage
collection only benefited the database left behind and not the backup
itself - and as I am immediately deleting the database after backup -
there's not much point!!

Having disabled garbage collection my backup was down to about 3 minutes -
from 5.5 hours - I'm very happy with that ;-)
