I think the problem is due to a firewall not necesarily on the server.
You should take a look on the XP client for any firewall there.

In my opinion the fact that Firebird locks on event request is a bug.
But the reason it locks is because it tries to establish a second
connection for event processing. It looks to me as if it tries forever.
