Thanks for your help.
I tried your suggestions but no help.
I still get INET/inet_error: read errno = 104
and INET/inet_error: receive in try_connect errno = 104 in the interbase
log. Is there some other verbose debug flag I can turn on when starting the
server to get more info.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

No, SS doesn't rely on (x)inetd daemon at all. You'll need to run
ibserver process instead. It should run automatically on system
init. Take a look at firebird script in your /etc/rc.d/init.d or where
this beast is on RH 7.x :-) You can also try rcfirebird script that
should be in your search path (/usr/bin). Try to add a plus (+) to
your /etc/host.equiv file.
