Subject Connection slowdown question?
Author Daniel Rail
Hi,

I'm just asking for some ideas.

A client of mine is noticing a slowdown in the connection after having 4
client machine connected to the server. He only told me that it's
noticeable when I asked him if it was a drastic change in
speed. Obviously, it would that much, but there is a wait message that
I've put in and it's starting to actually appear. He has approx. 25,000
records in a query that is executed and displayed in a grid, but I doubt
that there is actually 25,000 records that are fetched, because when there
are less than 4 users connected, the grid shows up instantaneously. He's
using IB 6.01 and we are in the process to switch our application
completely over to Firebird, since I'm already developing for FB (we're
only waiting for the official release to deliver it, our clients feel more
secure knowing that it's an official release, go figure!).

I'm just wondering what tweaking can be done. The database page buffers is
set to 5,000 and when doing a connection the client database cache buffers
is set to 255. The page size is 8192. I already only retrieve the few
records that are needed to view in the grid and the grid is only used for
viewing and selecting, not editing. It's just that we know that we'll get
some clients that will have more than 4 users and will have to make sure of
a good speed for the connection, I know the network can have something to
do with it too. The network is a 100Mbps and the server is a 1GHz computer
(I don't know the whole specs of the system).

Any suggestions will be appreciated!
