Just been stung by the same problem.
It depends where you are using the date. In 'raw' SQL
statements it has to be in american format mm/dd/yyyy, which
is why yyyy.mm.dd can be more useful. Other levels of
working do the conversion for you. It's a bit of a mess
really.
