I tried reloading the rpms for Firebird SS quite a few times, tried CS and
Interbase only the Firebird SS had a problem

Finally got it running though, It seems though there was a conflict in the
xinetd and the hosts file. How I managed to connect to the server with
ibconsole and get a perfectly working response working system, even though
interclient was barfing left right and centre, I don't know.

Will take the ant script and try do some builds at home because I want to be
able to get a debug build working in case I have problems working with
JBoss.

I really am interested in helping with a straight JDBC driver as this would
fit very nicely with JBoss especially if it has the full transactioning
support.
