Come to think of it, it is entirely possible that blobs don't work in
autocommit mode. I don't really see an easy way around this, I can't see
how autocommit is supposed to work anyway, as I noted in my post about
autocommit being implemented.

Could you provide a simple example (ideally a junit test) that demonstrates
the slowing down?
