I have been having this problem for a while now, but it seems to be increasing (see my other mail).

Well, I am located in Europe, the Netherlands to be exact. I have been having this problem with Ziggo (large cable provider), TUdelft/SURFnet (national university and research institute network) and the T-Systems/T-Mobile corporate network.

Well both are out, because it is simply a case of being unable to resolve the host name to an IP-address. So there isn't even any HTTP communication at that time. I am also not using any proxy.

With nslookup does (forward) lookups, not reverse lookups. In this case that lookup (hostname to IP) is failing. Tracert is unhelpful since I don't get an IP address. Note that I am using Windows Vista and it is requesting both the IPv4 and IPv6 address (if available). I have had the same problems on Windows XP (no IPv6) and Linux though.

The results of an nslookup with set debug, set d2 and set norecurse are:
C:\Users\mark>nslookup
Standaardserver: ns1.tudelft.nl
Address: 130.161.180.1
