I have been having the problem on and off for a while now, but in the past it was something occurring once, and then a it worked for a while, but now it seems to be a daily occurrence.

Pinging every minute will keep the local DNS cache fresh, so there won't be any communication to the DNS to retrieve the information again. It could also be a geography problem. Maybe the DNS is responding just within timeout duration and that is fast enough for your location, but not for mine.
