25th Oct 2006, was the 29th anniversary of the announcement of VMS V1.0.

Work started on the VAX and the operating system to run on it in April 1975
and the two proceeded in parallel. On 25th October 1977 the VAX-11/780 and
VMS V1.0 where announced. VMS was first shipped in March 1978.

There is a fascinating presentation on the history of OpenVMS development
which was presented by Ruth Goldenberg at the NL OpenVMS Technical Update
