What they actually need is a database backend that doesn't crag up under
load. The timeout is happening because the home page has to access the
users database on SF and it's not Firebird. (Not sure if it's in DB2 yet or
they are still running the user database with MySQL...)

Often a Refresh will get you into the queue; but, if you can see the menus
then you can access the rest of the site. AFAIR, the home page is the only
one currently that has to access the database. It could be just a
transient problem as SF has been moving a lot of stuff onto new servers lately.
