I agree that Markus has woken up a lot of IBDI "lurkers" and has drawn in some valuable contributors. I happen to believe that there are a lot of you out there who still have some of that old inspiration and fire that kept us picking away in the lists a year ago, when we had to save a database.

It's always been our practice and policy to split specific topics off into a dedicated list when the discussion got too detailed to sustain general interest. Note that ib-marketing is still there, although the last posting there is dated Sept 19! This isn't "censorship", it's organisation.

Somehow, the job of managing the lists landed in my lap. Except for the many shifts of sand in commercial ownership, it's not a too-tough task. The key thing about the process is that new lists evolved as a response to common need, never as a fork away from the main community. The lists have been a vital source of material for the web site, and continue to be.

Markus needs to take care to understand that the IBDI doesn't administer Firebird. The IBDI is the "global" stamping ground of open source users of The Database. Firebird per se is of interest to most of us. The topic of "Firebird web site" belongs fairly and squarely with the Firebird project. The Firebird project lives at Sourceforge, not Yahoogroups.

Not all Firebird members subscribe to the IBDI list. Anyone with an interest in what is good for Firebird is urged to join an appropriate list within Firebird's own campus and find out what is already going on there. One needs to listen to the vibes of the people who make Firebird exist and look for ways to contribute.

As a "rock" within the IBDI and a member of "The FAT" (Firebird Admin team) I'm grateful to Markus for his wake-up call to the sleeping IBDI. His introduction of a new logo and the interest it generated were welcomed by everyone.

It is, however, disturbing to observe Markus asserting authority in regard to Firebird activity that he has no right or precedent to claim. His presumptuous and unresearched assertions are quite incredible. (Yesterday I collapsed in mirth when Markus attributed to me the role of "InterBase advocacy". ROFL!!) He has managed to give offence to a number of people close to the centre of Firebird action - the ones who are really making it happen. What should be a positive movement has collapsed into a divisive, offensive scrap that is dominating this list.

My moderator mailbox is filling up with complaints from IBDI and Firebird people pleading for sanity. I urge Markus to review his recent postings and actions and consider whether he really wants to be remembered as the guy who tried to splinter the Firebird supporter community.

I'd like to remind subscribers that you are expected to observe the rules of netiquette in the IBDI lists. Avoid long, unnecessary requoting, don't cross-post, don't re-post (and this includes not paraphrasing your old postings). When asked to move a topic to a more appropriate forum, please oblige. Offer ideas and topics. Be aware of time differences and avoid swamping the list with your own replies to every posting. Flaming is OUT. Open discussion doesn't work when one person tries to dominate every current topic and counters every contrary view with insults and twists.

Despite pressure from other moderators, I don't **want** to ban Markus from the IBDI list. I don't think it solves our problem. I'd prefer to see Markus focus his energy on collaborating productively with the members of the Firebird project, through Firebird's own channels and with better comprehension of how collaborative projects work.

When you follow the rules, list discussions work well and more people are encouraged to participate. I don't moderate the lists prescriptively. I operate on the principle of "three strikes and you're out". Markus, this is my second request for you to move the Firebird website discussions to the appropriate forum.
