Just my own personal speculation...
Borland doesn't seem to be mixing hands with the community efforts to push
open source along much and so I am suspicious of what they are up to. If I
read this right they are going to have a "production" license for deploying
an application. Separate and distinguished from the open source license.
Will this cost money? If not, why bother distinguishing the license?
It appears to me that Borland is going to be charging for future versions of
InterBase again. I suppose if their pricing is reasonable enough many
organizations aren't going to be bothered by this (my employer being one of
them) but if they are going to go the commercial route with InterBase
instead of going the "OPEN" source route they had better market it
sufficiently or some poor manager in the InterBase division is soon to hit
and try climbing the same brick walls that Paul, Bill & Wayne eventually had
to give up on. If Borland doesn't make a solid 3-5 year commitment to this
product line and make their investments and returns based on a scale
reaching out this far it is going to be a waste of time for them IMHO. I
wonder what Dale's ultimatum's are...
Sad thing of it is, the competition for a commercial version of InterBase is
far more dried up than it was 2 or three years ago. I really don't see how
Borland is going to have significant profit potentials with the position
FireBird is in to compete against such an endeavor. It's no wonder that
there are still feelings of hostility lingering in various corners and
crannies...
