This is going to sound weird but I think the name interbase needs to stay.
Ask any joe CIO off the street about firebird and he/she will give you a
puzzled look. Ask about interbase and one in ten might recognize the name.
OTOH ninety percent of them will recognize the name borland. The best thing
Borland can do is to lend their marketing expertise to the project, let the
project use the name interbase and associate it (even if peripherally to
borland.

I know a lot of people don't like borland here but face it they have name
recognition and that counts for something. Imagine how long it will take to
brand firebird or ibphoenix to the level borland is.
