Hi !
I'm currently not as involved as any of you guys, I've only done some work on IB for half a year or so for a customer.
I'm just curious - whether there exists any interest in the following features, I miss them in all DB's I've been working wirth so far:
a) Events are great, but the concept might be enhanced: Extended "IB Event-like" network functionality, making it possible to make direct calls back to the client:
- During a transaction (Events are accumulated and sent upon a commit)
- The Client may return a code that allows for breaking a lengthy process
- Feedback useful for showing progress (*very* useful when developing large-scale apps)
b) A mode for disabling Multi-generation record handling (or whatever it's called), allowing Exclusive access to save a *lot* of time on large operations/analysis. The otherwise brilliant IB concurrency scheme is quite expensive...indices would possibly be available for fast count/selects on index solely in such a mode.
c) Metadata changes in Stored Procedures
...just curious, as I mentioned...don't know very many of you guys...;-)
IB is superior when talking about multi-user programming and ease of installation/maintenance. When working with possibly enormous number of inserts/updates like I do, i surely miss a few oracle features, like deciding where to put index files, etc. I would believe, though, that a way to go is trying to cover some of the features missing in RDBMS systems generally...
BTW - have you noticed that Oracle have redesigned their licensy policies, seemingly reducing prices radically....???
Hi, ho, keep up the good work !
