MPE/XL is an old HP operating system (circa 1988?) that was
"almost" like unix, meaning not at all like unix. Bill
Karwin said off list that HP is threatening to reactivate it
as an application server platform.

Since we have a version we can revert to, should time actually
run backward and we find the need for MPE/XL, I strongly recommend
getting rid of those conditionals.
