It sounds like you want a object oriented database. I know very little
about them except that they exist. I have read briefly about ones written
in Java, python, and C and of course some databases have object oriented
extensions like oracle and postgres. It seems to me that this is a very
useful thing So mauch of what I do is more hierarchical then relational I
have always wished for a cleaner model to accomplish this stuff. Have you
ever checked out ACEDB I played around briefly with it and it's kind of
neat. It was originally designed for a genome/dna database and has a lot of
DNA specific datatypes and functions but it's pretty much object oriented
and can house most types of data. It's open source too. Here is the URL

around with ZODB which is a part of ZOPE.
