I remember once i had to access a database including the port number (3050) even though it was the default. But this should not be a factor as firebird accesses the dll's locally.
One thing comes to mind and that is rights to the dll. I.e sift through all security thingies for the directory and the files. I suspect an "access denied" error message hidden deeply somewhere.
