My own situation is such that I currently maintain an old
application under Delphi v6, FB v1.5 and IBO v4.8.7.
As far as I am concerned the application is considered "stable"
on those versions and will not be updating any one component,
only rare bug fixes applied.

Development of a major upgrade to that application is started
using Delphi 2010, FB v2.5 and IBO (long story), but various
things have kept me from making significant progress. Despite
the delays I am not really tempted to do this work under D6,
I'd rather deal with the upgrade problems (and the extended
testing times etc.) all together.

IOW: I am happy for you to drop support for the 5 & 6 versions.

I think this makes a great deal of sense. It's not just the
unicode thing, there's other stuff in there too that just gets
too difficult to integrate or separate. Such extra work only
makes the source more complex and so more prone to errors.
