Try changing the GCPolicy in firebird.conf from 'mixed' (the default) to 'background'. Note, though, that even if this improves things, it won't cure an inherent sticky garbage problem - you'll be back in the v.1.5 situation, where you might need to schedule sweeps every couple of days.
