Hans,
properly optimized searching index there is a need to keep aggregate
statistics. You merely claimed but I would very much be interested in
hearing the details.
This is not an easy issue to iron out. Either it is simplistic and won't
have optimization statistics or it will create hotspots managing those
statistics. The only way around this is there have been engine extensions to
manage them the same as indexes are managed.
