Then what might be better is to just give him a count of the number of
records remaining that have - say - NULL in one of the fields he still
needs to populate. We give something similar for 'address' so that the
Supervisor knows how many records have not been full populated and can
chase users who are trying to cut corners ;)

The 'record number' is normally just an ID populated by a generator and
can be useful as a primary key but is not normally made visible in the
client application. It just hides in the background and provides links
to the detail tables. But I'm sure you can provide a 'done' indication,
counting the records dropped and then tracking those that have been
updated so you can give a rough '45% finished' display.
