Wouldn't the XP .gdb extension delays be the same for any database drivers
?

Here a another thing to check, I didn't see it. If you are
testing on an XP machine with the extension of your DB as
.GDB. Check to see if the "System Restore" is on. XP will
backup .GDB files as pare of the System Restore. When I
initially switched to XP it took me several hours of work
to determine that my 30-40 second start up time was from
XP coping the DB into the System Restore.
